Dolphin watching in Malaga: Dolphin sightings

Dolphin watching in Malaga. Our seas and oceans are full of wonderful creatures of nature that cannot be seen except in their natural habitat, the sea. The combination of Malaga’s location with the Mediterranean Sea on one side, and the proximity of the Strait of Gibraltar to the Atlantic Ocean on the other, makes the Costa del Sol a special transit point for a wide variety of marine animals. These include bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, sunfish, and seabirds, which can be seen on the surface, allowing us to feel the magic of being in contact with marine life just a few meters away.

The experience of sailing peacefully and encountering dolphins is one you will never forget. The moment of sighting them is incredible and very exciting, but we must grant them the respect they deserve, keeping in mind that we are the visitors to their habitat, their home.

How to act correctly when seeing dolphins in Malaga

On most occasions, lack of knowledge and the excitement of the moment lead us to commit imprudent acts that can hinder or harm the navigation of these animals. For this reason, at OceaNautic, we want to do our part to raise awareness and train our clients regarding marine life. So, pay attention! Keep these tips in mind:

Do not chase them.

Approaches should be made very gently in a trajectory parallel to that of the animals (not from the front, behind, or perpendicular to their path), without making sudden changes in course or speed. Speed should be constant and not exceed four knots or the speed of the slowest animal in the group.

Avoid making noise

Do not shout or produce sounds that could attract or drive them away.

Do not touch them

Limit direct physical contact from both people and the vessel itself.

Beware of propellers

If they approach the boat within 60 meters, put the engine in neutral or stop it if necessary. If you need to move away for any reason, start the engine and maneuver gently, being careful with the boat’s propeller to avoid harming them.

In short, to see dolphins in Malaga, stop quietly with your companions and use all your senses to enjoy this unique and unforgettable moment.
