Working with the PER, Yacht Skipper, or Yacht Captain

We have good news for holders of the Recreational Boat Skipper (PER), Yacht Skipper (PY), and Yacht Captain titles, as from July 1, 2019, they will be able to perform the following functions:

  • Provide supply transport services, always within Spanish inland maritime waters and territorial sea up to a maximum distance of five miles from the departure port, marina, or beach, carried out by recreational vessels and personal watercraft, destined for other recreational vessels or ships.
  • Perform docking, anchoring, towing, or displacement activities for recreational vessels within the waters corresponding to ports, marinas, or beaches, as well as their transfer to another port or location, provided that the navigation does not take place at a distance greater than five nautical miles from the coast.
  • Conduct sea trials for recreational vessels and personal watercraft.
  • And the command of vessels intended for lifesaving on beaches.

Furthermore, holders of Yacht Captain and Yacht Skipper titles may also skipper recreational vessels transporting up to 6 passengers for tourist excursions and recreational fishing, within the same geographical scope indicated in the previous paragraph.

The requirements established by this new Royal Decree to obtain these authorizations are as follows:

The aim of this new regulation is to facilitate the work of certain groups who operate recreational vessels in their jobs, such as port sailors, nautical personnel, or workshops dedicated to conducting vessel trials, skippers of small restaurant boats on beaches, or lifeguards, among others.
