Which vessels can I operate with the basic navigation license?
Obtain your navigation license in Malaga with Oceanautic
The ‘titulín,’ or more accurately, the Navigation License, is the most basic and straightforward nautical qualification, allowing you to enter the world of recreational boating. This nautical qualification does not require an exam and can be obtained at any approved school, such as Oceanautic. It allows you to navigate, or rather, to skipper boats up to 6 meters in length and any type of personal watercraft, regardless of engine power. You can operate these types of vessels during daylight hours, from your home port, and without venturing more than 2 nautical miles from a beach or safe harbor.
Length refers to the boat’s length, and the distance of 2 nautical miles we can travel from port is approximately just over 3.5 kilometers.
The reason the engine power is not limited is that with the vessel’s length restriction, it will not be possible to install an extraordinarily powerful engine that is not commensurate with the boat’s size. In other words, if we install a more powerful, and consequently much larger and heavier, engine than appropriate for a small vessel, it is highly likely that we would end up sinking the boat.
The course with Oceanautic
The course lasts six hours, with the first two dedicated to theory and the following four to practical training. At our school, the course takes place aboard our vessels, so both theory and practice are conducted on the boat. These vessels, as in other schools, are always longer than those our new skippers will be able to operate with their Navigation License. This way, we have the opportunity to show you the path that this initial nautical qualification would follow.
At Oceanautic, you will have the opportunity to thoroughly learn about both sailing and motor vessels. This way, we offer a versatile type of training where anyone with an interest in the nautical world, but without a specific preference for a particular field (personal watercraft, fishing, sailing, etc.), can decide how to approach the activity in the future.
What is the navigation license for?
The ‘titulín’ or Navigation License can also serve as an entry point into the world of recreational boating, allowing you to discover if you have a seafaring spirit. You can find out if this world captivates you and if it is the first step in boating before obtaining subsequent qualifications that enable the operation of recreational vessels.
